I’m thinking of keeping all the reverbs and delays in my FX loop, should I go delay–>reverb–>delay–>reverb? I’ve seen a lot of guys on youtube doing that set up.
And for the chain, should I put my noise supressor right after my compressor? Then go to the octave pedals (whammy then micropog) then to the volume pedal?

Thanks guys.

admin answers:

The ordinary rule is Gain>Modulation>Delay, because delay tends to affect the others in an “undesirable” way and Gain affects modulation in a “desireable” way.

So Guitar>GE-7>OS-2>US600>DD-3>amp, and put the multi in depending on what you mainly use it for, probably after the OS-2.

Of course you can experiment however you like, the GE-7 can definitely go after the OS-2, and you can experiment with it anywhere else for a different result.
Putting a delay before the overdrive has the effect of increasing distortion and generally muddying up the delayed signal. That can sometimes by good if you like to sound different, (personally I have several delays throughout my chain) but it won’t sound like a classic delay sound.
Pitch shifters like the US600 are more effective the stronger the input signal is, which is why you want the gain before it, but you can reduce the negative impact on tone by placing a distortion after it it. I have a signal boost before my boss PS-3 and a distortion after. With only one gain pedal you should put it before though.
I imagine you probably use the multi fx for chorus/flanger/phaser type modulation, so that should definitely go before the delay.

Hope that’s not too much information!

Alex, if you take a really good look at this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNBJSei0XV0 you will see clearly that these guys do not use any effects pedals. All of there sound is clean, it’s very high treble (that gives it a thin sound) and whatever amp they are using, if it has any built in effects is what they are using. Sounds to me like a pretty thin very tin like clean sound with little gain applied to it. In my opinion that song would sound a whole lot better if they did use some kind of effects. You should be able to improve on it with that Digitech pedal.

admin answers:

Hello, Kevin! When placing effects in order, you have to consider how each audio change will modify the one that is placed before. The arrangement I would recommend would be Tuner, Whammy, Reverb, Delay, Noise Suppressor, and Volume Pedal. Complicating this orderly arrangement is the “tone sucking” characteristics of some pedals (see http://www.stinkfoot.se/andreas/diy/articles/suck.htm for details). For some general tips on effects ordering, see http://www.gmarts.org/index.php?go=222 , http://www.harmony-central.com/articles/tips/guitar_effects_guide/ , and http://www.robertkeeley.com/faq.php#Effect%20Order . As far as using the effects loop, you will need to decide for yourself whether you like the sound of your effects before the preamp (connected from the output of the effects chain to the amplifier input jack), or before the power amp (connected from the “send” jack to the effects chain input, and from the output of the effects chain to the “return” jack). Let me know if I can help further. Best regards, Dana

A question for guitarists and sound engineers..?

I have a Boss GT8 FX pedal a Fender and a Gibson. Is there any way I can find out the ways I need to tweak the pedal in order to get signature sounds. For example say I wanted to get a Joe Satriani sound or a Greenday sound.. like the sound in the song When I Come Around.
Is there a website or somewhere I can go to get tips? This freakin pedal has about 20 pre-amps and 20 overdrives and I dont know where to begin. I have a sound grasp of reverb and delay. Thanks.
Oh if it makes a difference, I am using both guitars in my attempts to create sounds and it is running from a Fender Blues Junior tube amp which is a very versatile amp. Contruary to popular belief, you do not need a huge stack to make a “fat” sound.

The only way is through trial and error to find the sound you like.

admin answers:

Eh, both sound pretty bad, although the Marshall is good for a beginners amp. It’s okay. The Peavey Valveking was one of the worst amps I’ve ever heard and I tried it just two days ago. It also depends on what you want to play. Based on your selections, I’d say go for a Randall. Those are very underestimated. They have insane distortion for Nu-Metal and Metal in general and don’t cost that much.

Marshall Tube amps sound great, but are a little dry. Line 6 is another possibility. Who cares if some people hate them, most of them sound decent.

For blues, Fender all the way.

A B-52 is actually better than what you have listed. I played one and was very impressed. They are tube, crunchy and can do blues. Not to mention they are inexpensive. The B-52 AT212 is probably your best bet. I would seriously think about buying that one.

Http://www.b-52pro.com/start.html Here’s a link to their website.

Unfortunately not.. This seems like a good idea but unfortunately the devices have drivers that allows Xbox to pick them up and run with them. If you tried to do it on the wii, there will be no way for the console to recognize the device and therefore not run it.. (its not like a pc that will recognize any device u plug in) However, there is a way to use 360 controllers on the pc.. But im not too sure about that guitar.. I dont see why not since it is basically a modified controller.. But since ur only interested in the wii.. The answer is nope..

admin answers:

No it won’t work.

While it’s true, that the Xbox 360 has USB connectors, the Xbox 360 needs drivers, that tell the Xbox how to interpret the signals coming from the USB cable. It needs to know if an USB Thumbdrive, an iPod, a USB keyboard, wired controller or HD-DVD drive is attached to it.

On the PC you have to install the driver yourself. On the Xbox 360, you can’t install drivers, so Microsoft put some neccessary drivers already in the Xbox firmware.

Now, the Xbox has a driver for original Xbox controllers (like the wired Joypad or the wired guitar).

However, the PS2 to USB adapter wouldn’t register as an original Xbox controller. It would identify itself as a PS2 to USB adapter, and the Xbox wouldn’t know what to do with such a device, since the drivers are missing.

Furthermore, the PS2 controller wouldn’t have the guide button, the directional pad and the Back button.

So all in all: It will not work.

Just about any electronics retailer (Best Buy, HHGregg, Circuit City, etc.) will carry them, but where I usually go for game needs is GameStop or EBGames. They’re owned by the same parent company now so it’s really indifferent where you go, they should have the same stock and prices. Here is a link to what most EBGames should carry. They are out of stock online right now but I would call around to your local stores. I called mine this morning after seeing your question and all the stores closest to my house had two or three in stock as they are pretty popular. Hope this helps!

It’s been rumored that Jim Marshall has mentioned that as long as he’s alive, that ain’t going to happen.

I believe Marshall is more of an amp than Peavy and costs more. I have seen Marshalls w/ bad tubes (older ones) and have replaced a bad output transformer in one once.
Vox amps are pretty representative of the British invasion (musically… As in The Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc.) but Marshall gets some good 80′s rock too. I’d personally go for Vox because I feel that you get better sound quality out of their tube amps.

Question about guitar amps (will choose best answer)?

Which amp is better for home practice, 15 or 30? I don’t need it ultra loud.

And what kind of amp should I get? My friend has a Vypyr and another has a Spider III. I’m thinking about getting one or the other, but I’ve heard that the Roland Cube crushes both.

admin answers:

For home practice, 15 is perfect. The thing about a 30, is that when you are ready to start playing in a garage band, a 30 will still be good enough. A 15 will be a “maybe” if you’re in a garage band. But, since you’re just looking for a bedroom amp, 15 is perfect. The thing you need in a 15 is good tone and versatility, since you are still new and in search of your guitar soul. The Vyper and Spider III are good enough and versatile enough. Yes, it’s true that I would buy a Roland Cube before either of those amps. Go to your friends houses and listen to them. Then, go to GC (or whatever) and give a Cube a try. Also, try these…. I think I would buy one of these before a Cube.

The fiorst two are 5 Class-A Watts… Better than 15w that you’re used to.

Peavey Valveking

I think if it were my son, I’d tell him to buy the Vox Valvetronix. More quality for your money, etc. If you’re into Metal or Hard Rock, you’ll be happier with the Marshall. If you’re more into a bluesy Classic Rock tone, the Epi and the Peavey ValveKing will do you well.

Yeah they will get worn out faster, but I wouldn’t imagine it would be THAT noticeable.

If your using a high gain amp like a peavey, engl, or diezel you can turn down the gain a bit. Most of that super awesome crunch will be lost when you add the element of a band. Sounds good alone, but not with others. You actually lose more tone that way.

If your using marshall, orange, mesa, or fender I can understand why you would crank the gain.

Also, how difficult is it to bias them myself? I’m just trying to be as self-sufficient as possible so I can save some money.

admin answers:

David,

Be very careful tinkering in there. Even if you are going to try it yourself, the capacitors in those things have the potential to literally kill you.

Biasing is not that hard just dangerous. Just plan to take it in every time. They should be able to do it pretty quick.

But if you don’t bias, well everything should be just fine – although it might sound better if you had them biased, and it would likely improve the life of the tubes somewhat, it shouldn’t hurt the amp.

What is the difference between guitar amp tubes?

I am looking to replace the tubes in my Peavey JSX. Right now I have a set of EL34′s but was just wondering what the difference is between the different kinds of tubes like the 6L6′s as opposed to the EL34′s. Obviously they have different tones and act slightly different. I mostly play hardcore metal. Does anyone have a suggestion of what I should get?

admin answers:

Generally speaking, EL34′s will start compressing the signal at a lower level and go into distortion more easily.

In general, the 6L6′s will stay cleaner at higher levels. You really have to push them hard to get them to distort. That said, I know that a lot of metal guys like them because then only have to back off on their guitars a bit to get the sound to clean up.

The original Fender Bassman design that Jim Marshall copied for the original JTM-45 called for 6L6′s, but those were not easily found in Europe. So, he used what was readily available…the EL34′s. The problem with them was that they were fragile, and when Unicord started importing Marshalls, a lot of them were showing up with broken tubes in them. That’s when the switch to 6L6′s happened in Marshalls.

Since your amp has adjustable bias, your free to experiment with the two different types of tubes (Marshall’s required a modification to be able to switch from one to the other). Just know that the same tube type from different manufacturers will have slightly different tones to them.

Good luck.

Those are interchangeable. The EL34 is a power tube with a completly different base pin pattern and operating voltage requirements. It’s possible to change EL34s for 6L6′s, but you will then need to rebias the amp…the grids operate at very different voltages.

Back to the preamps.

You can swap the ECC83′s for 12AX7′s. The tonal differences will depend on the brand of tube that you put in there. If you go to www.tubedepot.com, you’ll see a lot of different options for those tubes, and some descriptions of how they tend to sound.

Same thing with a ECC82/12AU7. The difference between the 12AX7 and 12AU7 is how much gain they have. The 12AX7 has a gain factor of about 100. The 12AU7 has a gain factor of about 60.

In your amp, I’m guessing that the 12AU7 is being used as the phase splitter right before the EL34s (assuming that your amp us running the output as Class AB). You can experiment with putting a 12AX7 in the phase splitter location, as that will drive the output tubes a little harder. Some guys like that, some don’t.

The preamp tubes are self-biasing, so you can chang them out without worrying about that.

Good luck.

admin answers:

Sound (tone) and price.

Tube amps were used back in the 50s-70s and they have that vintage Classic rock sound of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. They’re well known for their classic overdriven sounds.

Solid State amps are more modern sounding. However, with digital technology we’re gettin’ really close to re-creating that tube overdrive in a digital amp.

Authentic tube amps cost around $200-500 for a 5-20 watt practice amp and as much as $2000 for a decent head (without the cabinet). While for a solid-state of the same size and output you will pay $60-100

Go on Youtube and listen to a bunch of tube amps (within a certain price range) and then listen to a bunch of solid states and you will eventually be able to hear key differences.

admin answers:

You need to get a halfway decent distortion or overdrive pedal. Boss makes a few good ones.

Set the tone to 3o’clock and the gain to about 2:30.

Your amp should have the trebel at 3 o’clock, your mids at about 11 o’clock, and your bass somewhere between 1 and 2 o’clock.

You’ll want to use a single pickup for the rhythm and a humbucker for the lead. Your tone knob on your guitar should be turned down just a hair.

You’ll also want to add a bit of reverb and delay. You don’t want to use more than just a little bit of reverb, however, because it will make your notes run together and you loose the melody. You’ll need to set your reverb so that it repeats a few times and not a “million” as well.

You might need to tweak your settings just a bit, but that will get you started.

Also, understand that these guys recorded on special gear in a specialized studio. They then specially mix all of the tracks to sound big, open, and great. You’ll have difficulty reproducing those tones at home unless you have superb equipment, so understand that you’ll come close, but not likely replicate their sound unless you have all of the same things.

By the way, if you can’t see your knobs as 2o’clock, ect, turn your knobs all the way down. Put a dot of whiteout where the hour hand on a clock would be at 7:30. Just pretend that dot is an hour hand, and you’ll understand (it’s true because it rhymes, lol).

admin answers:

You are talking about a TRS (1/4″) cable probably, from either your bass or from the amp, as im a output on the amp head. You could buy a USB preamp, so your bass/amp TRS (1/4”) plugs into the preamp, which goes to your computer via USB. Or, assuming you have a mic input on your computer (1/8″), you can just buy an adapter that goes from TRS (1/4″) to 1/8″ so it goes from the TRS to the plug adapter, to the 1/8″ into the mic input of your computer.

XYZ is correct about you not needing a big amp at home. I play predominately heavy metal and my choice of at home amp is a Peavey ValveKing Royal 8. I have replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion Super 8 and changed the tubes to my preference but otherwise the amp was left stock. This may only be a 5 watt amp but it is incredibly loud and the addition of a distortion pedal like the Boss MZ-2 that I use and you pretty much nail the Metallica sound. Make sure you drive it with a distortion pedal, not a overdrive or fuzz pedal because they won’t give you the sound you want. When you get some more cash grab a delay pedal to fill the sound out a bit and then buy a wah so you can butcher solos like Kirk Hammet.

admin answers:

First off, you will probably want to crank your gain first, THEN adjust the volume to where you want it. That distortion you are going for comes from the gain knob being up. So come in behind it with volume.

Your other knobs, such as bass, middle, and treble, will set your tone. I have heard you can Scoop the middle, which means turn it higher than the others like at 8 or 9, to boost your gain.

Set your bass high enough to beef it up a little. Treble can be wherever you want it.

HOWEVER, based on your particular amp model, you may not be able to acquire much of that electric guitar sound (distortion) and may need a distortion pedal such as the DS-1 by Boss…

What is the best stereo amplifier to get?

It depends on how you’re planning to use it…

If you aren’t going to play in a full band (eg. Only guitar & vocals or you have a pre-recorded background music), then it’ll be fine…if there aren’t very much noise in the crowd (audience)…or else you’ll have to amplify the sound with a mic near the speaker of your amp…

If you’ll be playing in a band, but will only be playing mellow songs such that you’ll only be using clean tone and the other instruments wouldn’t be that loud, it’ll be okay…but there will be a problem if either the room is very big and you have a lot of audience or the crowd is making a lot of noise…

But, if you’ll be playing rock, metal, or other forms of louder music, then you might not be heard by the audience…you wouldn’t even want to turn up your volume if ever you’re going to use distortion because there’ll be a lot of feedback regardless of the guitar or amp you use…you may not even hear your own playing…

My Marshall MG30DFX has recently died on me, and the sound wasn’t top notch really.

Are footswitches compatible with all amps?

I have a Marshall MG Series amplifier. I’m looking to get a footswitch, most likely a Marshall brand as well.
Is this a good amp??????

I love to sing, so I was looking into getting an amp and a mic to sing with. I would just be using it mainly for fun, or possibly to make videos. It would just be something I use privately in my room to increase the volume of my voice, which is pretty quiet.
This is either due to the low quality speaker that is in the amp, I’m not familiar with this amp so I don’t know if this is the cause. The other thing that might be happening is if you have too much distortion, some off the notes blend, resulting in the problem your having.

Is there a special kind of amp for electric violins or do you just use guitar amps?

Please help. Do you just use a normal guitar for electric violin or there there a special kind?

admin answers:

Oddly enough, I know some folks who actually do this! They’re all professional, at some level. One runs a pro recording studio and the other two tour the US, year round, in Celtic rock bands. They all have an acoustic violin, one uses a pickup, the other two use really small microphones. The two that tour, also own electric violins, custom made by Jordan. (Very nice stuff).

They will all play through a DI box (or a preamp) directly in to a PA system. They will also use guitar amps… Depends on the situation. One of the touring artists (Miss “D”) really likes the Line 6 brand combo amps, that have a ton of stuff built in. She’ll also use BOSS pedals for EQ, gating and such. She REALLY likes to experiment with her sounds and has a lot of fun doing it. All her gear was originally made for guitar, but she makes it work, by creative use of EQ. Pedals and multi-pedals are popular, as they offer the same ease-of-use as the do for guitarists.

For a really clean, natural sound, you could look into the amps that are made specifically for acoustic guitars.

The bassist from Muse uses the ElectroHarmonix Big Muff pedal.
admin answers:

You can, but you probably shouldn’t.

The amp couldn’t care less,
it’s the speaker that you have to worry about.
The low frequencies can damage the speaker.
It’s not built for them.

You can probably get away with it for while,
if it’s a good amp,
IF…..
You keep the volume levels low, and DON”T turn up the bass control.
But,
NOT recommended in most cases.

Learning how to use guitar pedals, amps??

admin answers:

You can look up demos of the type of pedal you’re interested in on youtube. That way you’ll be able to tell what the effect does and how it changes the sound of the guitar. Kurt Cobain used pedals like the Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal. Here’s a demo of the Small Clone so you can hear what it does…

Try looking through Cobain’s other effects (you can find a list here… Http://www.nirvanafreak.net/faq/faq1.shtml under “Part II Effects”) and looking up demos for his other pedals and amplifiers. When you find some that sound appealing to you, go to your guitar shop and try them out in person to find which ones you like. When you actually get one, just play around with the knobs until it sounds good to you.
