To tell you the cold hard truth.. You probably need a new guitar. Preferebly one with humbucker pickups with a high output. You might want to check out jackson or esp for some good heavy guitars. Because Slayer as you know is a thrash/death metal band, and most of the time they play hard.

When you get a new guitar, its recommended that you try it first, but what you’re primarily looking for are the sound and output of the pickups, and how well it fits to your playing style.

Other then that the only other option I could think of is buying a distortion pedal. You might want to try out a BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone. That has a pretty sweet distortion and is a really powerful pedal. That would cost you about $100 rather then spending $600+ on a decent guitar.

So your options are:
A new guitar
or
A Distortion Pedal

Anyway, good luck on trying to play like slayer

Ok, so I had my system installed at best buy and i have two Alpine Type R 12s powered by two Alpine MRP-M500 amps, one for each sub. I have a Fierce Audio distribution block to hold my two tube fuses….the original fuses were the 5AG40A fuse….anyways, the fuse for my left amp blew…took it into best buy, the guy gave me another one of the same kind….it blew again about a week later….took it BACK in. The guy asked what kind of fuse it was, i told him the 40, he said i prolly needed an 80 but he didnt have any so he gave me another 40 and a 60…i put the 60 in…it blew. WHAT THE HELL. The one on the right is not blowing, and everytime the left one blows its fried on the bottom of it…could the bottom clamps holding the fuse not be tight enough er somethin?? the amp doesnt get hot at all so I dont think its defective….suggestions?

The Vyper is a great amp! Especially for a beginner. It has plenty of great features and very usable tone. For the price it can’t be beat. There are a lot of snobs out there that will tell you that tube amps are just better than solid state amps. While there is some truth to this I can tell you from experience that there are plenty of great sounding solid state amps out there too. It really depends on the user. By taking some time and experimenting with the controls you can easily conjure up some cool sounds. This is a great amp for your situation. It is loud enough to compete with an acoustic drum set, is very reliable, and has good enough tone for gigging in garages or small stages and backyards. It has some very cool effects built in so you do not have to blow a bunch of cash on pedals. I definitely recommend getting the full size footswitch that enables you to fully utilize all of the amps capabilities.
Eventually you may decide to get an expensive tube amp, but this amp will serve you well until then.

admin answers:

It sounds like you have a pretty good plan. Just run the front 2 channels to the high range speakers. Your amp should be 2 ohm stable. And the speakers should be 4 ohms. Run 2 speakers from the left front and 2 speakers from the right front in parallel. Then, bridge the back 2 channels to the sub. Look in the owners manual to find the proper way to bridge the amp. You’ll lose the fader with this configuration. But, it may be your best bet. You could also see if the amp is “tri-mode” stable. In this case you would wire all of the high range speakers off of their own channel. And wire the sub across the rear channels. Again, check the owners manual. The only drawback to this is that you lose all of the on board crossover adjustments. I guess it really depends on what you want to sacrifice..

what’s best amp for mainstream rock?

looking for a tube amp (perferably under $1000)(and perferably combo) that would be good to gig with and record with. The sound I’m lookin for is almost like a 3 doors down type of sound (not heavy metal and not classic rock) but more of a modern rock sound, I’ve checked out quite a few amps and obviously i wanna try it b4 i buy it but i will mail order if an amp sticks out as exceptional, needs to be a good clean (not fender) and hopefully decent distortion but can add pedals if need be, which i would also take suggestions on pedals that give a nice mordern rock distorted sound. Thanks for your time
first off i didnt say i wanted to sound exactly like 3 doors down just rock sound like that…. 2nd off you crack me up they’re makeing millions on their sound and you say oh im a real guitarist prolly cuz all you play is scales? well im a rhythm guitarist so yeah my main job is chords 90% of the time, its called team effort, ever hear of it?

Have you checked out any Orange or Laney amps? Orange is legendary for rock sounds, and Laney too (although Laneys might have a bit much gain than what you’re looking for). Also, don’t write off Fender amps so quickly, the vintage stuff might be not what you’re looking for, but some of their modern amps are fantastic and can get some really sweet raunchy rock-type distortion.

Also, don’t rely on what other people say (including myself). Do your own research because what you might think is a great sound, other people might not like and vice versa. Only you know what kind of tone you’re looking for.

I’m building a water based Telescope defogging rig. What kind of pump would be best used for that?

The system consists of two loops, sharing a common reservoir. Fluid is pulled from reservoir and then pumped to a heater, in this case an automotive windshield washer preheater, and then back in the reservoir. Temperature is monitored by a thermometer. When needed, another pump pumps water from the resivoir through a tube that goes around the scope. I’m trying to find two pumps that take a small diameter tubing (such that is used for washer fluid), however I’m not quite sure what to get. Do you have any suggestions? What kind of amps/voltage would be drawn from the pump?

admin answers:

Since you don’t state the amount of water to be pumped in terms of gallons per minute (or hour) it is hard to answer.

I am assuming you only what a small amount of water. With that in mind, I would suggest you consider a small fountain pump similar to those used on decorative garden fountains. They come in sizes as small maybe 100 gph.

You can find them on the internet by putting in “pond and waterfall pumps” or “garden fountain pumps” or just “fountain pumps.”

There really isnt such thing as an acoustic amp, amps are amps. The only way to define acoustic and electric is if it has a distortion switch or gain knob.

As far as the amp, get the best one you can find if you entertain.
Or just get a cheap one if you are just messing around.

I run it straight out from my computer’s soundcard into the direct in for the amp using a 1/8” male to male connector. This is NOT the guitar input, it is a separate AUX in port. I was wondering if this is better than getting a separate speaker system. (keep in mind that this puppy can get pretty loud if she wants to) I don’t have a whole lot of money to burn, since I’m a student, but I enjoy music, and am an audiophile. I was wondering if there would be a significant improvement that would be worth spending extra if I were to purchase a separate speaker system. To my ear, it sounds fine, But maybe I’m missing out on some of the sounds? perhaps someone bearing technical knowledge of acoustic guitar amplifiers would know better? lemme know if I’m getting quality sound, or if it’s just garbage!

The one drawback is that the amp is MONO not STEREO because it is only one speaker. A normal set of two computer speakers will be stereo. Other than that, if you are happy with it then stick with it.

admin answers:

Are you looking to get actual midi signals or just straight guitar tone? I don’t do a lot of midi music but if that’s what you need then I believe you will need some sort of converter from audio signal to midi.

If you are just looking to record the sound of the guitar I would recommend that you do not just plug your guitar into your PC. In my experience, this will usually sound BAD.

I often use the TonePort UX1 made by Line6 to connect my guitar to my computer. You plug your guitar cable into this device and then plug the TonePort into the USB port on your computer.

It comes with software that does a nice job of simulating a bunch of different amps and effects pedals. Also comes with good recording and editing software. I believe they run around $120. For everything you get you can’t beat the price.

Good luck,

Amps settings? If you mean you want a digital modeling amp, the Peavey Vypyr 100 would be my first choice for that. Followed by the Fender Mustang III and then third, the Line 6 Spider 150 watt 2×12 would be next in digital modeling.

However, a good Marshall tube amp would be better than any digital modeling amp. A JMP or a DSL should work for you.

A blow out OR a short?

Hello! I have a pair of Pioneer upright loudspeakers. They were in good working condition UNTIL during a test of my vintage SA-7800II integraded amp, in searching for a defect in the left chanell(no sound thus right chanell running mono to both speakers) two point stems were inadvertantly touched with a screwdriver tip resulting into a pretty powerful spark. The Unit itself is still fine but both speakers play now with a muffled transistor-radio-like sound with nothing amplified as normal. hooked up and tested to other amps both channels play on both speakers but with the sound mentioned above. Opening up the speaker case (cabinet) I tried to see if it was a shorted wire by aplying a new wire hooked to a separate amp and applied to the terminals inside the cabinet(old wires are obviously still attatched) got the same signal to speakers with non amplified effects. SO is this a short in the speaker itself as in the voice coil? If so, how do I access the voice coil? or is this a blown driver? the driver I see here are two stem terminals on a small tab of circuit board (vocab/sp?) with positive and negatives going to a wire coil spool connected to the cabinet. the terminals supply three speaker wires to tweeter, midrange, and woofer. could it be that spool? no visible damage to any of these. I have yet to see if there was a melt or a gap in the speakers voil coil which is my reasoning for wanting to access same. HOWEVER. if I didnt turn the full wattage up via the volume knob, a melt down wouldnt occur anyhow. Im thinking its either the wires….or the electrode/coil connected to the internal cabinet wall. anyone advise? afterall, I’m still gettin non distorted sound, just distant and muffled low/ If turn up the volume high- I hear the power and sound its trying to push but its akin to turning up a transistor radio up to high and holding it under a pillow.
My pedals are set up in this order in my pedal chain which I think is correct from what I’ve read.
May the Tone be with you.

Srsly, Peavey is good ampage. Only you are responsible for how you sound, go with the* amp you think will help you achieve the sound you want.

As for the Fenders, the Vibrolux looks nice, but the Twin is an anachronistic holdover from the wattage wars of the ’60s and ’70s that takes two men and a boy to carry and can’t be dialed above 2 without the owner of the joint telling you to “turn that dang thing down.” The Twin is a great amp, but about all you can use it for today is super clean country or jazz with reverb, you just can’t get the volume up to gnarly levels at any place smaller than a coliseum.

*[reliable, and in this case both Peavey and Fender have earned good reputations for reliability]

Gallien Krueger vs Fender vs Warwick (bass amps)?

I have to pick between a GK Blackline 110, Warwick Blue Cab 60, and a Fender Rumble 60. All these have the same watts except for the GK which has 70. The bassist from Avenged Sevenfold uses GK amps. Mike Dirnt from Greenday uses the Fender Rumble series and so does the bassist from Anthrax and Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. I have no clue who uses Warwick amps. I play all kinds of rock so im looking for something that can be used for metal, punk, alt rock, hard rock and good old fashioned rock rock. The Fender one has some lights at the bottom that flash as you play but no F/X. The other 2 have some F/X but no cool light show =(. Which would be most versatile? Best sounding? Most reliable? Looks cool? Heres the links for the 3 amps

I have 2 GK Keyboard amps, which we use in tandem for stereo, rather than the usual setup. They are over 20 years old – and work a CHARM. We had the speakers replaced this past year – gee, after 20 years, we took them in for a check-up – they were STILL playing fine when we took them in! We run mixers thru them, and they have bounced all over our gigs ( we are classical musicians, but amps are amps!). They LOOK great, sound fabulous, pump out 100 watts per channel, and have NEVER let us down. AND – since they are concentric, they are smaller per watt, and LIGHTER per watt, than ANYTHING else out there. Every so often, I *go shopping* again – and ask all my friend whose opinions I respect – and NOBODY EVER comes up with anything to touch these. Yes, – they cost a ransom – but divided by the number of YEARS they work??? I have turned over ALL the equipment in my rig ( that’s into 6 figures worth) at least TWICE – and still kept these. If they were stolen today, I’d buy the SAME ONES tomorrow.

How’s THAT for an endorsement – in case you wondered how they hold up over time?

Sort of. They HEAVILY process your raw guitar signal so there is the chance that you will lose the tonal nuances that make your guitar unique. Remember that line 6 amps (and other similar amps/modellers) require TONS of parameter tweaking to get the right sound. I would recommend getting a simple tube amp unless you want to really get into programming. On the other hand, if you like synths and drum machines and the like, then a line 6 might be good for you since you are familiar with all the technical stuff. So the question is: do you want to spend time playing guitar or programming your amp? If you get a line 6 and dont spend the time programming, your guitar tone will suck.

How does a Line 6 Spider III [75 watt] compare to a Epiphone Valve Junior Half Stack [5 watt]?

What I understand with guitar amps, is that tone is more important than volume. Right now though, I am confused about which amp I should get. My brother wants to buy me a Line 6 Spider III amp, the 75 watt one, but my friend tells me that I should buy a Epiphone Valve Junior Half Stack, which is a 5 watt. Price range is about the same, but I am really confused as to which I should buy.

I have a Japanese-made ESP Viper, with ESP LH200 pick-ups, if that helps a bit.
Nate – My playing preferences are metal/rock. My price range is… probably under $300. Mainly I want a decent amp, with a good tone, that will last me a long time, and will go great with my guitar.
I took a look at the UG Community link. I was wondering how the Epiphone Junior compares to the Blackheart BH5H and BH112 Half Stack. The price is the same, the specs are almost the same, but Epiphone is a more recognized name.

admin answers:

Get the epi jr, it may be small, but for $250 the tone is amazing, plus if you run a good OD into it, you can get some good hard blues/rock overdriven tones.
Whatever you do, do not get the Spider 3, it is pretty much a solid state hunk of junk. Its price and bells and whistles may be appealing, but the tone is just thin, forced, and too digital sounding.
It is no less than a fisher price toy aimed at buyers who think: OMG l0tz of w4ttag3 and 3ffectz for ch3ap!!!

EDIT: However, if your looking for a good high gain, more modern/metal type of tone, your gonna have to pool your money for something nicer.

It would really help me if you told me your price range and playing preferences.

What amp should I buy?

I want an amp that’s good for grunge/punk and that can give me a nice clean tone, and plunge into a heavy distortion. It needs to be relatively low priced, at least 50 watts, and not tubed. My pedals I use are Boss Ds-1 and 2, Electro Harmonix Big Muff, Poly Chorus, Small Clone, and a Boss Super Chorus. My main guitar is a Fender 1969 Mustang reissue, which has single coil pickups. Any suggestions on what I should go for?
Oh yea, the amps I’ve alredy owned/tried are: B-52 Ls-100 and At-212, Raven Rg-100, Vox VT-100 and VT-50, Fender Frontman 1×12, and a Peavey Vypyer 30. The Vox VT-50 is my amp now, which is alright, but I need something a little better for grunge

Why no tubes?

I think Vox is making the most quality amps these days. My buddy has a 100 watt 2×12 combo that I like a lot. It’s a valvetronix something or other; Guitar Center carries them.

The Fender Frontman amps are pretty cheap, but they come with a 5 year warranty that is easy as pie to cash in on if needed.

I also have really enjoyed some Ashdown amps I’ve played on at stores. They are a relatively new British company. Their gear is still pretty inexpensive, but watch for the prices to rise a lot in the next few years.

Personally I like a lot of low end in my sound so I play through Laney and Randall amps mostly. Hiwatt or a classic Orange would be cool too.
