Hey Jim,
Your amp is not faulty!
Great choice for an acoustic amp. The marshall as50r will do the job and do it well. As for your microphone choice it is superb but unfortunately the as50r does not have phantom power output to accommodate the shure beta 87a. There are Three options here... 1) you can upgrade to the Marshall as50D which has the phantom power option. 2) you can try a non phantom power microphone and find one that suits your needs ( I am sure if you brought your amp into your local music store they would let you demo some mics.)(Us music guys and gurls are nice people and love to help!) If you do not have time to get it all to the music store you can head on over to the shure website and compare your 87a to the 87c and you can decide http://www.shure.com/americas/buyers-guide/mic-listening-lab give it a try it's a pretty cool comparison tool
3) you can run your shure beta 87a mic into a small mixer with phantom power and then into your amp.
If you need to check out the Marshall as50d amp, Another Shure mic or Small mixers with phantom power we recommend sameday music they are just awesome and ship pronto! Just click on our link in the sidebar on any page.

Thanks for pickin our brain and good luck in your quest for that perfect tone and perfect sound...You will know it when you find it! ,Chris

I've just got hold of a Marshall as50r and was hoping to play and sing through it. However, the xlr microphone socket doesn't work when I plug in my shure beta 87a. A friend of mine told me that it could be that the amp doesn't have a phantom supply for such a mic. Can someone advice me wether or not the amp is faulty, or do I need extra equipment in order to make my mic work through this amp? Thanks, Jim.
